The music is as comforting as the band name suggests, but the name actually comes from something pretty cold - a refrigerator. Well, refrigerator poetry to be exact. If you know the band's music, this is pretty fitting: Life in Bed have a knack for mixing seemingly random ideas into something altogether spectacular.
On Life in Bed's newest release Passed and Presents, the listener can hear bits and pieces from shiny 70s flair to 80s mellow pop in their well-constructed songs. "Ordinary Day" is one of the more upbeat pieces and reminds one of a relaxed afternoon with nothing to do, while a song like "Author" can move the listener into a pensive trance. From exhilarating songs like "1000 Reasons" to energizing pieces like "Another Round," Passed and Presents is a great work of art. The guitar parts are intricate but subtle, and the vocals are dreamy; it's all held together by a tight and intuitive rhythm section.
Pittsburgh's Life in Bed came together in 2001, out of the ashes of Manifold Splendor. They are a humble group of musicians, but carry some pretty serious talent and passion. In 2003, Life in Bed released Two Point Perspective on drummer Sean Finn's own Polar Recordings. This was their first full-length album, and it was very well received by fans and critics alike. Likewise, as they began touring regionally, positive reviews started coming in about their powerful live show.
Not ones to fretfully put out another release without perfecting it first, Life in Bed worked on their next release, the Exercises for Translation EP, for over a year, utilizing the help of Jason Kirker (Modey Lemon, Pikadori) and H-hour Studios. The EP came out on Polar Recordings in 2005.
In March of 2006, founding member and guitarist Craig Svitek left Life in Bed, but was replaced with long time Life in Bed supporter and ex-Voice in the Wire guitarist Steve McMillen. They also added bassist Thomas Cipollone in August of 2007. The new ensemble have created a remarkable work of music with Passed and Presents, which has already been licensed for release in Japan through Moor Works. Back in the States, Finn's Polar Recordings is releasing Passed and Presents on March 25, 2007. Look for Life in Bed on the road in a town near you.
