Midtown Dickens Oh Yell!

What the folk, y’all? It’s Oh Yell! From Midtown Dickens!
You should listen to Midtown Dickens because they can turn an innocent video game into pertinent social commentary and still be cute (read: not be obnoxious) about it. See “Tetris.” You should also listen to Midtown Dickens because they know what it’s like to enjoy the smaller things in life. See “Eggs and Toast.” And finally, you should listen to Midtown Dickens because in the midst of great songs about living in Durham, enjoying the rain, and crappy jobs, they wrote a song about being a porn star that manages to be more charming than dirty. See “Big Screen.”
Midtown Dickens are a duo out of Durham, NC who play what they aptly call “front-porch music.” It’s raw, folk-y, and indubitably Southern. The lyrics are clever but not lofty, and the music sounds deceptively uncomplicated. In fact, though, Kym Register and Catherine Edgerton play many different instruments with aplomb on the album, and the songs are fairly intricate.
Beyond the endlessly amusing music, Midtown Dickens are not afraid of a little hard work, either: last year they played two solid months of dates without missing a beat (ok, they did miss one show but it’s only because they got so excited they drove to their Saturday gig on Friday!). They are also just fun people: they’re comfortable at a café table in Durham, entertaining thousands at a pride festival, dancing with metal heads in rural North Carolina, or just driving up the east coast in a cavalcade of vans with friends and fellow musicians to play their merry (and sometimes surly) songs. Please listen to Oh Yell! as soon as possible!
