Future Kings of Nowhere
Future Kings of Nowhere
307 Knox Records
October 9, 2007

What began as one man’s ambition has become a full band’s adventure. Shayne, original member of The Future Kings of Nowhere, began with his own ideas and an acoustic guitar. Over the last couple of years, new members joined in until the current line-up came together for The Future Kings of Nowhere’s debut self-titled album, due out this Fall on 307 Knox Records.

So how does one describe The Future Kings of Nowhere? Well you could throw out words like acoustic pop-punk, anti-folk, twang, and maybe even power-pop, but that would be an awful lot to say. The band has described themselves as “acousticore.” If you judged from The Future Kings of Nowhere’s music, the definition of “acousticore” would be Southern folk-punk that will infect your subconscious for hours after you listen.

Although some of the songs deal with loss and break-ups, the music is overall very upbeat and optimistic. On the saxophone-speckled “I Want You,” a lucky lady is serenaded with the endearing lyrics: “On the off-chance that you hear this song/ I’ll try and make it quick/ I know I ramble on and your attention’s limited/ so I’ll skip the metaphor and head right for the heart of it/ I want you.” “Never” takes an expectant, wistful tone in the words, but that is contrasted by a driving, super-fast beat. “Paper Napkins” with its line “I’ve thought it through/ and I think it’s true that I/ I don’t hate you anymore” exemplifies the sort of tongue-in-cheekiness that fills the entire album.

In the past year since the congregation of this line-up of The Future Kings of Nowhere, the band has collaborated on songwriting and also toured together. They have braved rainstorms in leaky RVs, interrupted bicycle theft, and entertained motorcycle gangs. The solidarity and friendship in this group shows in the music; the instrumentation is tight and the harmonies are joyful. The Future Kings of Nowhere are doing just great, thank you very much. Check it out for yourself!
