Stunning Models on Display
October 3, 2006
What is the difference between a self-taught musician and a classically trained musician? Is there a difference? Some might argue that self-taught musicians are more instinctual, and classically trained musicians are more robotic, more cerebral. In the case of The Receiver, though, a project spawned by a senior thesis, the music has an ethereal, organic element that speaks to both the listener’s intellectual and visceral impulses.
In 2004 at Ohio State University, Casey Cooper completed his senior composition project entitled “From the Corner of the Room,” a haunting mix of vocal, effects, and keyboard. The progressions and melodies were written to reflect the complexities of human emotion, and from hearing it anyone might guess he graduated with honors, because the final result is ingenious. Inspired by the thesis, Casey and musical brother Jesse Cooper formed The Receiver, added some instruments, and began to record and play shows.
The Receiver create what the introversive Casey says is an “attempt to create a musical atmosphere in which I’d be comfortable” and hopes listeners would be as well. This hope manifests itself on Decades. Songs like “Corner” and “Afternoon” are lovely and soothing and seem to flood the surroundings, swathing the listener in sonic beauty, while other tunes like “In Tunnels’ are more upbeat and driving. The album was recorded at The Buddy Project with Kieran Kelly, who signed The Receiver to Stunning Models on Display when he heard the potential in Casey’s senior project.
Casey and Jesse were raised in a musical family, beginning piano lessons at as early as age 4. Casey roused his interests in performance with doses of The Beatles and classic rock growing up, while Jesse was listening to prog rock like Yes, Moby Grape, Queen, and Led Zeppelin. They each honed their talents, Jesse starting on drums at age 10 and getting heavily involved in the Columbus music scene, and Casey gravitating towards bass guitar, even studying jazz bass at OSU before working on his composition degree.
Thanks to a healthy combination of a natural inclination towards music, nurturing, and fine-tuning of their musical skills, The Receiver bring you Decades. Please check it out and hear the brilliance for yourself.
